A PLUMBER earning more than the Prime Minister has revealed how packing in the hours and a shortage of tradesmen has left him rich beyond his wildest dreams.

Stephen Fry, 34, earns £210,000-a-year, lives in millionaires’ playground Kensington, West London, and takes luxury holidays to the Maldives through unblocking toilets and fixing leaky taps.

Mr Fry first entered the trade after his local Jobcentre suggested an apprenticeship when he was 17 and he set up his own business in his early 20s.

He works long days – 8am to 6pm on weekdays and on call overnight on Monday and Tuesday – but says the caffeine-fuelled hard graft has given his family a life he couldn’t have imagined growing up in Croxley Green, Herts.

He told the Mail on Sunday: “Every day is fun. You can go to a place where some woman has water gushing through the ceilings and is crying, so it’s a nice feeling when you stop the water and make her happy.

“‘I can’t really see myself stopping any time soon, to be honest. I enjoy my work. I’m a worker. I’ll be working till I drop, I think. On a Friday night, when people ask if I want to go for a beer, I am shattered. So it’s straight home to the family.”

Mr Fry works as a self-employed tradesman for London-based Pimlico Plumbers, owned by entrepreneur Charlie Mullins – who is believed to be worth £75 million.

Mr Mullins, 65, claims around a dozen of his 225 tradesmen earn more than £200,000 a year and around half earn £100,000 or more.

The company is currently at the centre of a legal battle over the employment status of tradesmen working for them, after another plumber claimed he should be given the same legal rights as an employee.

Pimlico is currently appealing against a court ruling against it, which could have ramifications for workers throughout the so-called ‘gig economy’.
